Nancy Shapiro

Dr. Nancy S. Shapiro holds an appointment as Research Scholar in the College of Education, Department of Teaching, Learning, Policy and Leadership (TLPL), and she served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Education and Outreach and Special Assistant to the Chancellor for P-20 Education at the University System of 浪花直播 (USM) for 27years before retiring from USM in 2025. Currently, Dr. Shapiro is Senior Advisor to the Civic Learning and Democracy Coalition, housed at American University鈥檚 Sine Democracy Policy and Innovation Lab.
As Associate Vice Chancellor from 1997-2024, she directed the University System of 浪花直播 P-20 partnership efforts, developing collaborations that fostered critical partnerships and learning communities to improve the quality of teaching and learning for 浪花直播鈥檚 teachers and students from kindergarten through college. As the principal investigator on major federal grants totaling over $50 million dollars from and the National Science Foundation (MSP) and the U.S. Department of Education (TQE), she worked to build sustainable partnerships between colleges and universities and public schools which support high quality professional development in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) content areas and prepare future teachers for urban schools. Her work on the USM STEM Initiative focused on increasing the number of STEM teachers produced by the public higher education institutions in 浪花直播, and her last funded project directed $4 million dollars to student success initiatives across the twelve USM universities.
Prior to her work at the University System of 浪花直播, she was the founding director of the College Park Scholars Program at the University of 浪花直播 (1994), the first interdisciplinary living-learning honors program at the University. She also served as director of the First Year Writing Program in the English Department. Her publications include three co-authored books, Scenarios for Teaching Writing (NCTE, 1996), Creating Learning Communities (Jossey Bass, 1999), and Sustaining Learning Communities (Jossey Bass, 2004); and numerous articles and reviews on a variety of undergraduate education topics, and an edited collection of essays on K-16 statewide initiatives in Metropolitan Universities (Fall 1999). Dr. Shapiro served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Learning Communities Research and Communication Education, and as a trustee of Fielding Graduate University.
Dr. Shapiro graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Brandeis University and earned her Ph. D. in in Education from the University of 浪花直播.
